Hamelin, winner of the 1,500m gold at Sochi, stumbled out in the beginning of his race to finish the last Saturday, reports Xinhua.
Victor An, winner of event in 2006, was ranked first in the group in 1:25.666.
China's Han Tianyu and Wu Dajing both qualified for the semifinals.
