The future of New Age motoring is here. A German engineering firm EDAG has shown that 3D-printing technology can be used to make a full-size car in near future.

The team at EDAG has built the concept named 'Genesis' by creating a thermoplastic model of the complex interior of the car.

EDAG envisions Genesis as being surrounded by an exterior frame - likely steel or aluminium - to provide a tough exterior to protect the structure, a report in wired.com said.

According to the firm, they could use carbon fibre to make the structure both stronger and lighter.

Inspired by a turtle skeleton, the EDAG design is unique because it shows that with the right equipment, you can produce a structure at a massively larger scale.

"As for the target of using additive manufacturing to produce complete vehicle bodies, there is still a long way to go before this becomes an industrial application," EDAG said.

The Genesis proposes that future cars could be produced in fewer steps by assembling large, exceptionally strong parts, the report added.
