The stand-off in the National Institute of Technology (NIT) here continued on Thursday with non-local students staying away from classes.

Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh arrived here on Thursday from Jammu to speak to the non-local students of the NIT in a bid to defuse tensions.

The state's Director General of Police (DGP) K. Rajendra Kumar also visited the campus and met the agitating students.

Meanwhile, the police released some video footage showing non-local students indulging in violence.

"Two FIRs pertaining to vandalism, damage to public property and obstructing a public servant from discharging duties have been lodged in Nigeen police station against those who created a law and order situation within the campus," said the police.

Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) troopers have been deployed inside the campus while local policemen are stationed at the gates of the campus.

The NIT administration has issued a notice asking non-local students who intend to visit their homes to provide telephone numbers of their parents so that permission could be obtained for them to leave the campus.
