Former Inter Milan and Roma tactician Andrea Stramaccioni has been appointed as coach of Greek football club Panathinaikos, following the dismissal of Yanis Anastasiu.

The Athenian club on Monday said in a brief statement that 39-year-old Stramaccioni has signed a contract for 18 months, Efe reported.

Italian Stramaccioni told the club's website that though he usually does not make promises, he promises to give his best to the club.

"I do not want to make big promises; this is something I don't do generally. The only thing I pledge is that I will give the best I can to take this club where it wants to go," Stramaccioni said in a statement on the club's website.

The Italian coach will sit on the Panathinaikos bench for the first time on November 21, in the Greek Clasico against Olympiacos.

After 10 rounds, Panathinaikos currently are in second place in Superleague Greece with 22 points, eight behind Olympiacos.

Stramaccioni started a short career in Bologna which only lasted one season from 1994-95, due to a serious knee injury forcing him to withdraw from the field.

His coaching career started in 2005 in Roma, where he worked until 2010.

In March 2012 he was appointed, following the dismissal of Claudio Ranieri, as Inter Milan coach, a post he held until the end of the 2012-2013 season.

In the 2014-2015 season, Stramaccioni was coach of Udinese.
