A 17-year-old student of a government school here died after he was allegedly beaten up by a group of students in the school compound, police said on Thursday.
The incident occurred on at 4.30 p.m. on Wednesday following a scuffle at Jyoti Nagar's S.K.V school, where the victim has gone to collect his transfer certificate along with his brother and meet his teacher.
Gaurav, a student of Class 10, wanted to switch schools to study class 11 and thus needed the certificate.
"His brother went to drink water and as he waited for him to come back, some boys came and took him to the school park where they beat him, a police official said, adding that when policemen reached the spot on getting information, they found Gaurav, lying badly injured.
"His brother Gobinda had informed his family and Gaurav was taken to GTB Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Northeast, Rajendra Prasad Meena said a group of five to six boys approached Gaurav to take revenge for a scuffle they had about 10 days back.
One of the boys has been apprehended and is being interrogated, he added.
Few of them were his schoolmates and rest from a different school. All of them were neighbours otherwise, Meena said.
"The investigation is on. We are yet to find the reason of the previous scuffle."
