Students delegation urges Delhi CM to open new colleges in DU

A joint delegation of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) on Sunday met Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over issues faced by students and demand for new colleges.

The delegation comprising of Saket Bahuguna, state secretary of ABVP, state joint-secretary Satender Awana, DUSU president Mohit Nagar, vice-president Parvesh Malik, secretary Kanika Shekhawat and joint-secretary Ashutosh presented memoranda to the chief minister and demanded immediate measures to solve students' problems.

The delegation told Kejriwal that no new college has been started in Delhi University (DU) in the last 17 years. While the population and number of applicants have been rising at a fast pace, the number of seats has remained the same.

"New colleges should be started in the university to increase the number of seats. The Delhi government should initiate steps for formation of new colleges, especially in the far-flung and rural areas," Bahuguna said.

Highlighting the high rents charged by the landlords especially from outstation students seeking accommodation while studying in DU, the delegation requested the chief minister to implement the Room Rent Control Act at the earliest to stop this exploitation.

It also demanded that students be provided with university special (U-special) buses by the Delhi Transport Corporation and that their bus passes should be made valid on AC buses (Red buses) also. Better college infrastructure was another demand of the delegation.

The delegation said that Kejriwal assured them of solving the students issues.
