In order to bring down the price of tamarind - currently around Rs.100 per kg in the open market, the Tamil Nadu government Saturday said it has resorted to bulk procurement and retail it through its cooperative stores.
In a statement issued here, the government said 600,000 kg of tamarind was bought from wholesalers in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Salem districts to be retailed at Rs.60 kg soon at the cooperative stores and Amudham Departmental Stores.
According to the statement, a sum of Rs.3.30 crore will be used out of the Rs.100 crore price stabilisation fund for sourcing the tamarind.
The statement said the government has procured 45,000 quintals of rice in the open market and sold at Rs.20 per kg which has resulted in reigning in the galloping rice prices in the open market.
