Hugh Jackman-starrer "The Wolverine", which released July 26, has grossed Rs.15 crore on the opening weekend in India.

"'The Wolverine' has garnered an astounding Rs.15 crore gross (Rs. 10.5 crore nett) in its opening weekend in the country," read an official statement.

"The opening weekend of the film also ranks as the third highest of all time for the production house's (distributor Fox Star Studios) Hollywood title after 'Avatar' and 'Life of Pi'," the statement added.

Jointly produced by Lauren Shuler Donner, Hugh Jackman, Hutch Parker and John Palermo, the film received an overwhelming response. Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios, said: "We are elated at the exceptional opening figures. The success of 'The Wolverine' has effectively set the platform for our next year's biggie 'X Men: Days of Future Past'."

Intended to be the sixth instalment in the X-Men film franchise, "The Wolverine" tracks the story of the American-Australian superhero Wolverine, who in association with an old acquaintance in Japan, fights a new battle.

Directed by double Oscar-winning James Mangold, "The Wolverine" also features Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima, Hiroyuki Sanada, Will Yun Lee and Brain Tee.
