The bodies of three members of a family, suspected to have been murdered, were found inside an apartment in Kolkata's Palm Avenue area on Saturday, police said.

"They were identified as Jessica Fonseca (42) and her 16-year-old twin sons Darren and Joshua," said Special Additional Commissioner of Kolkata Police (Crime) Debasish Boral.

The bodies were found inside a bedroom, while police also recovered three bloodstained kitchen knives and a 25-pound dumbbell from the crime scene.

Jessica's husband Neil Fonseca, who was found critically injured, claimed that his wife killed her two sons before killing herself.

While the deceased bore cut marks on the throat and injuries on the head, Neil Fonseca sustained wounds on his throat and hands.

According to police, Neil, an interior decorator, claimed that he had a fight with Jessica in the early hours of the day and in a fit of rage, she stabbed her two sons and also attacked him with a dumbbell.

"The statements made by Neil are subject to investigation and confirmation. We are also ascertaining if his injuries are self-afflicted or he was attacked," said Boral.

While there were as many as four other people inside the house, none of them heard any noise from the room from where the bodies were recovered.

The crime was discovered only after the room did not open in the morning and family members called police.

Police suspect marital discord to be the reason behind the crime.
