Three techies were among the five people arrested near here on Friday for cyber fraud, police said.
Those arrested from the satellite township of Salt Lake included shopkeeper Rajorshi Deb, who used to buy electronics goods like laptops and mobile phones from the three arrested techies - who bought them with the money they acquired criminally. An employee at Deb's shop has also been taken into custody.
The matter came to light after a woman lodged a complaint on September 19 alleging that she was the victim of cyber fraud.
She early last month had received a message on her phone stating her debit card had been blocked. The message contained a number that was to be called for unblocking the card.
The woman called the number and on September 14 received a message from her bank intimating that an amount of Rs.39,142 has been debited from her account.
Police on investigation rounded up three people working with the technology company in connection with the fraud and on interrogation, found they were habitual offenders.
"The three techies had purchased 14 laptops and 16 costly mobile phones from Flipkart. They used to sell these to a shopkeeper by the name of Rajorshi Deb at a discounted rate than the price," Bidhannagar's Deputy Commissioner (detective department) Kankarprasad Barui told media persons here.
"We are getting plenty of such complaints. In case anybody gets any message over debit or credit card, please don't reply without verifying it first. We request you to be cautious," he added.
