With sentiment here airing concerns over China's economic outlook, Tokyo shares ended choppy trading on Friday lower as the benchmark Nikkei stock index hit a record five-day loss to start the new year.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 69.38 points, or 0.39 percent, from Thursday at 17,697.96, its lowest closing level in over three months, Xinhua reported.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 10.62 points, or 0.73 percent, lower to 1,447.32.

Decliners were led by utilities, shipping and construction issues.

The turnover was about 3,201.7 billion yen ($27.04 billion).
