The Nigerian police said Friday that the toll in an explosion on the outskirts of capital Abuja has risen to 12.

Police spokesman Frank Mba said the blast on Thursday injured 19 people, who are now receiving treatment at hospitals in the city, Xinhua reported.

Mba, who described the number of the causalities as provisional, said an investigation into the explosion was underway.

Eyewitnesses said a Volkswagen which drove from the Keffi end of the road, exploded just about 50 metres away from the scene of an April 14 blast in which more than 75 people were killed and 124 were injured.
