A motorcyclist was killed after being hit by a train at an unmanned railway crossing in Odisha's Jajpur district Friday, an official said.

The incident took place near Bairi railway station. The biker died on the spot after being hit by the train, a spokesman for the Bhubaneswar-headquartered East Coast Railway told IANS.

The biker was crossing the tracks despite a warning by a volunteer engaged by the railways, he said.

Angry locals squatted on the tracks for several hours after the incident. They demanded Rs.5 lakh compensation for the deceased's family and immediate construction of a gate.
