The Trinamool Congress's sole legislator in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and also announced the merger of his party with it.
Shyam Sunder Sharma, who represents Maant in western UP, gave a letter to this effect to the assembly Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey.
He also sent a similar letter to the BSP supremo Mayawati who later okayed his entry into the party fold. Sharma is a seven-time legislator who has been continuously elected from Maant in Mathura since 1989.
He is counted as one of the top leaders of western UP but has been a political grasshopper. He had contested the 2009 Lok Sabha polls as a BSP candidate but had contested the 2012 state assembly polls as an independent. He later joined the Trinamool.
