A group of Aliah University students, claiming to be associated with the Trinamool Congress students wing, vandalised the varsity premises after the rejection of their demand for granting them pass marks in a "tough" exam, the vice chancellor said on Tuesday.

At least six first year engineering students demanded that the authorities disqualify the mathematics supplementary paper or grant them 65 percent marks since the questions were tough, said Vice Chancellor Abu Taleb Khan.

"They were enraged why the questions were tough. Following their demand, we said papers of students who had appeared for the exam will be re-evaluated.

"We decided those who failed would have to appear for re-supplementary exam and 65 percent grace marks will not be given. When we announced these decisions, then the boys became aggressive and started breaking things," Khan said.

He said one of the boys, the general secretary of the varsity's students union Abdul Rouf, "was the main person".

"They said they belong to Trinamool," Khan said, adding he started feeling uneasy as he is a cancer patient.

The agitating students had also sought to lay siege to the vice chancellor's office on Monday at the New Town campus of the varsity, after voicing their demands.

A complaint has been lodged with the New Town police station.
