A tusker was run over by a goods train between Madarihat and Dalgaon stations of northern West Bengal's Alipurduar district in the early hours of Sunday, forest officials said.

The Guwahati-bound goods train coming from New Jalpaiguri station mauled the tusker around 2.30 a.m.

The elephant's carcass was removed from the tracks and buried in a nearby forest, the officials said.

Due to frequent incidents of elephants coming under trains in northern West Bengal, the railways authorities had put speed restrictions for trains in the area which is known as the elephant corridor.
