Two Class 12 students were arrested here for abetting the suicide of a teenage girl who accused them of defaming her by alleging she had illicit relations, police said Monday.
The girl, a resident of Safeda Nagar near Pataudi town, some 26 km from here, Sunday committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her house while her family members were away.
Pritam and Praveen Kumar - both 18 - were arrested for abetment to suicide, police said. Both were also studying in Class 12 in a private school.
"Pritam was sent to jail under judicial custody while Praveen would be produced before the court Tuesday," Anil Kumar, chief of Pataudi police station, told IANS.
The duo had allegedly the girl, also a class 12 student at a government school, to befriend one of their friends saying that they would otherwise defame her by spreading rumours that she had illicit relations with some people, police said.
"In her suicide note, she mentioned that she can't bear such baseless allegations made on her anymore," said the investigation officer.
The suicide note read: "I am sorry Papa, we have faced lots of trauma due to wrong allegations. I love you and my brother very much. Pleases make sure that my brother (studying in 11th) must get quality education and job so that we can challenge and counter such allegations."
The girl's family also said they were facing pressure from the family of one of the accused to withdraw the case.
"Some of them on Tuesday, even at the cremation ground, asked us to compromise," Jawaharlal, the victim's uncle, told IANS.
"Our investigations are on and there may be some more arrests," police said.
