Two people were killed and three others injured in a shooting incident in a residential area in the city of Hamm in western Germany, media reported Wednesday.

According to initial findings, a man shot several people with a firearm in a retirement home, Xinhua reported citing German news portal Focus Online.

The perpetrator killed himself subsequently at the scene of the incident, according to prosecutors.

However, it still remains unclear how many people were involved and what the motive was.

Public prosecutors from Dortmund have already started an investigation after the incident.
