Two militants were killed on Sunday in a joint operation by Meghalaya Police and the army in the state's North Garo Hills district, along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
The two militants from the Achik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) died after a gunfight broke out around 4.45 a.m. between militants and the security forces at a remote location in the district, Inspector General of Meghalaya Police G.H.P Raju said.
Superintendent of Police North Garo Hills Ramesh Singh said two pistols were recovered from the militants.
The AMEF is a splinter group of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), a militant outfit based in Meghalaya's Garo Hills region. The outfit had been carrying out extortion drives in the Garo Hills region for a long time.
