A Palestinian man was shot and killed by Israeli border guards after allegedly trying to stab them on Tuesday, the Israeli police said.

The Palestinian arrived at the Kiosk check point near Bethlehem in the West Bank and caused border guards to look at him with suspicion, a police spokesperson said.

Guards ordered him to stop for an examination, on which he pulled a knife and ran towards them. The guards shot at him and paramedics pronounced his death at the scene, the spokesman said.

In another incident, a 37-year-old Palestinian from the east Jerusalem neighbourhood of Issawiya allegedly tried to stab Israeli border police guard.

The guards then fired at him. The Hadassah Har Hatzofim hospital in Jerusalem pronounced him dead after he was taken there.

The current wave of weeks long violence between Israelis and Palestinians was sparked following a controversy over the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in east Jerusalem. It quickly escalated into violent attacks and clashes throughout Israel and in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip territories.

Twelve Israelis were allegedly killed in lone wolf attacks by Palestinians in the form of stabbing, shooting and vehicular runovers since the beginning of October.

According to the Palestinian health ministry, more than 80 Palestinians have died, some in clashes with security forces during protests, while others have been gunned down by security forces and vigilante citizens trying to carry out attacks against Israelis.
