Former law minister and senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily on Thursday said that it would be difficult to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in a country as diverse as India.

"It will be difficult to implement UCC in a country like India where various communities and groups are governed by personal laws," said Moily.

"In a country of this nature, implementation of UCC is next to impossible. There are about 200-300 personal laws that exist in India covering various communities," he added.

Moily also said that this should not be made a "communal agenda" and not be considered a Hindu versus Muslim issue.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and a number of other prominent Muslim organisations on Thursday rejected the Law Commission's questionnaire on the Uniform Civil Code, calling it "misleading".

Calling the questionnaire "misleading and divisive", AIMPLB General Secretary Maulana Wali Rahmani said Muslims will not respond to it.

"We will boycott this questionnaire. No Muslim will respond to it because it is misleading and deceitful. The Uniform Civil Code is divisive and will lead to social unrest," he told media persons here.
