A high alert has been sounded across Uttar Pradesh following the execution of 1993 Mumbai blasts accused Yakub Memon, officials said.
A special vigil is being kept on the Indo-Nepal border and minority-dominated areas.
An official told IANS that the Indo-Nepal border in Siddharthnagar district of Uttar Pradesh has been sealed for 24 hours and security forces have been asked to step up vigil.
ADG (Law and Order) Daljit Chowdhary said a close watch is being kept on elements who may foment communal trouble.
Police officials across the state have been asked to screen people at busy thoroughfares and at malls and other market places, officials said.
Security was beefed up in Agra, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Aligarh, Meerut, Moradabad and western UP, an official of the home department said.
Yakub Memon was hanged in Nagpur prison early Thursday.
