Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley Saturday said it was up to the government to decide whether parliament will function or not, and his party was firm on its demands for resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the 2G and coal blocks scams.

"You should address this question to the government. If the government loses all sense of dignity and shame, then don't expect other democratic institutions to run normally," he said here.

"We stand by the demands which we have made," said Jaitely, the leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha.

The BJP has stalled parliament since the commencement of the second half of the monsoon session demanding the prime minister's resignation.

"The government cannot pretend as if nothing has happened. Really a lot of serious things are happening in this country and the pressure on this government has to be kept up," said Jaitley.

"I think the whole government's position has to be made untenable. This government is living a scam a day," he said.

Asked whether there were cracks in the opposition, he said: "I don't think the opposition is failing. We have raised the pitch of these issues as far as we can. The entire opposition has been speaking in one language. Whether it is the 2G or coal block scam."
