US military forces have captured a senior commander of Pakistani Taliban in an operation, the US State Department said Friday.
"I can confirm that US forces did capture TTP (the Tehrik-e- Taliban Pakistan) terrorist leader Latif Mehsud in a military operation," reported Xinhua citing State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf.
Mehsud has served as a trusted confidante of the Pakistani Taliban leader, Hakimullah Mehsud, she said.
Harf, however, said she did not have any details of how, when or where Mehsud was captured.
The spokeswoman said the TTP had claimed responsibility for the attempted bombing of Times Square in 2010 and were behind attacks on US. diplomats in Pakistan. The group has vowed to attack the US homeland again, she added.
