The US has extended "sincere congratulations" to Abdulla Yameen after he was elected the next president of the Maldives.

"The US and the Maldives have a long history of cordial relations, and we look forward to continuing this partnership with the new president and his administration," an embassy statement said.

"The extraordinarily high turnout Nov 16 was a tribute to the Maldivian people's commitment to the democratic process and democratic values," said the statement.

"The US reiterates its friendship with the Maldivian people as they work to build a peaceful and prosperous future."
