Contending that water distribution in the country was lop-sided, the head of India's central water authority official Thursday called for national level policies and strategies to brace for the challenges to meet the crisis.

"It (water) is no longer a simple fluid. Although India has reasonably sufficient amount of water, the distribution is still lop-sided," Central Water Commission chairman Ashwin Pandiya said at a programme here.

"We need national level polices and strategies. Since water is a strategic resource, it can no longer be discussed in isolation," he said at the inaugural session of the two-dayWater Exposition,2013, organised by the CII Eastern Region.

Pandya stressed on political and societal unanimity "so that water or the lack of it does not become a constraint in development".
