A wild elephant went berserk, damaging several houses and buildings in West Bengal's Siliguri town, on Wednesday officials said. It was later brought under control using tranquillisers.

A large number of police and forest officials tried to rein in the elephant from the Baikunthapur forest after it moved near the municipal ward No.40 of Siliguri town.

Police said several people sustained minor injuries in the melee.

The tusker destroyed many houses and buildings across Sevok Road, Chayanpara and Iskcon Temple Road areas of the town.

"According to the latest report, the situation is now under control," state Forest Minister Binay Krishna Barman said here.

A forest official said the wild elephant was brought under control using tranquillisers.
