A day after BJP president Amit Shah said that if the BJP-led alliance comes to power in Assam, it will probe all cases of corruption of the Congress government, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday welcomed the move, but questioned the Centre's silence for the past two years.

"If the BJP-led government at the Centre was so serious that the present state government has indulged in corruption and misappropriated central funds, then why did it not institute a probe in the nearly two years of its tenure? This is nothing but an election gimmick," Gogoi said.

He said central leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been raking up the foreigners' issue with an eye on the elections.

"As in the last parliamentary elections so also in the ongoing assembly elections, the BJP's central leaders including the prime minister have been raking up the problem of infiltration from across the border. But once the elections are over, the issue will be put on the backburner," Gogoi said.

Questioning the Centre's seriousness over infiltration, he said it (Centre) did virtually nothing to strengthen the borders in the past almost two years.

"If infiltration is taking place, then it is the central government's responsibility to stop it rather than passing the buck on the state government," he added.
