Woman with slew of diseases gives birth to child: Doctors

A 26-year-old pregnant woman suffering from a slew of diseases, including diabetes and liver complications, gave birth to a child at a hospital here, doctors said on Thursday.

Dolly, while four months pregnant, was diagnosed with Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) a disorder that can lead to easy or excessive bruising and bleeding.

The platelet count in such conditions can decrease ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 per cubic mm.

Describing Dolly's medical condition during her hospitalisation, doctors said her platelet count had gone down to 14,000 per cubic mm and her liver and kidney functions were deranged along with moderate anaemia.

"She was shifted to the ICU and put on intravenous infusion to control hypertension and prevent convulsions to prevent devastating effects on her as well as the baby," said Nupur Gupta, head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Paras Hospital.

"She received steroids to improve platelet count and multiple blood transfusions to treat anaemia," Gupta said at a conference organised to make rare medical cases public.

Gupta said for her and a team of doctors it became difficult to save the child at a point. However, they took the opinion of several other doctors, including those from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Considering the complications, the doctors had to perform a cesarean operation and Dolly gave birth to a baby boy, weighting only 630 grams. The baby had to be kept in neonatal ICU till he became healthy.

Gupta said: "Now, mother and baby both are doing well."
