Women in the World summit to discuss Paris attacks

A significant discussion at the forthcoming Indian edition of the Women in the World summit here on Friday will be how to tackle terrorism with relevance to "the Islamic attacks in Paris", says the event's founder Tina Brown.

She says the speakers will try to list out "what can be learnt" from the dark chapter of terrorism in Paris.

After getting applauded for the initiative globally like New York and London, Brown is organising the Women in the World summit in India. The event will take place on Friday at The Taj Mahal Hotel at Mansingh Road here.

In a conversation with IANS, Brown, an internationally popular journalist and author, said: "On Friday, we will be having many conversations which are tremendously relevant to the current Islamic attacks in Paris, the rise of terrorism, how to beat terrorism, and women who are fighting terrorism.

"We will be incorporating women to talk about what they know, their insights and what can be learnt from the attack in Paris."

The horrific terror attacks in Paris, famous for exuding love and romance, left everyone shocked and appalled. French President Francois Hollande called the strikes, which left at least 129 people dead and more than 350 others injured, an "act of war".

Calling the situation "frightening", Brown, former editor of The Newsweek, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Daily Beast and Tatler, also asserted that there are times when the focus in more on the terror strikes in the West.

"The attack on Paris is being reported all over the world, and sometimes the focus is so much on the attacks in the West, but the same day of Charlie Hebdo shooting, a hundred people were blown up in Nigeria... even the Mumbai bombing was horrendous.

"It keeps on happening. So what these attacks have in common will be very interesting to talk about. It is a very frightening period that we are living in," Brown said.

The summit will see names like Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett, critically acclaimed stars Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das, Iranian female racing car driver Laleh Seddigh, an Israeli and a Palestinian mother working together to find peace, sharing their extraordinary and inspiring stories at the summit.
