Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his message on the International Day of the Girl Child on Wednesday, said his government was working to provide all possible opportunities for girls to excel.
"On International Day of the Girl Child, we reaffirm our commitment to work towards gender equality and increase gender sensitisation.
"India is proud of the accomplishments of the girl child and we are working to provide all possible opportunities for the girl child to excel," Modi said in a series of tweets.
Also called the Day of the Girl, it is an international observance day declared by the United Nations in 2012.
It started to support opportunities for girls and to increase awareness of gender inequality faced by girls worldwide.
