A young man suspected of raping and murdering a 9-year-old girl was beaten to death on Thursday by an angry mob in Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh, police said.
Police said the girl went missing while sleeping outside her house on Wednesday night in Malhipur village. Her body was found on Thursday morning near a river.
Villagers allegedly noticed the youth's presence nearby under suspicious circumstances. Enraged, they chased him and severely thrashed him.
The injured youth was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
"We are monitoring the situation. Police have been deployed due to tension in the village," a police official told IANS.
The body has been sent for post-mortem and a murder case lodged against unidentified people.
