A different worry

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi (pictured) asked all Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators and members of Parliament (MP), including ministers, to submit their bank statements from November 8 — the day he announced demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes — till December 31, to party chief Amit Shah by January 1. Opposition leaders have asked why the details shouldn’t be put in the public domain, why it shouldn’t also cover the period from November 1, and why spouses and children of BJP leaders shouldn’t also submit their bank statements. Some BJP MPs, while claiming they have not made any significant deposits during this period, have another worry. They are wary of submitting their bank statements as these would show how they seldom withdraw money from their salary accounts. This would make it evident that these MPs have other unaccounted sources of income.
