Last week, in seemingly coordinated action, Union government officials indicated their inability to appear before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on information technology to discuss the Pegasus leaks, causing its chief Shashi Tharoor to write to the Lok Sabha Speaker to take action against them. This is a serious breach of responsibility by officials of the executive, the top edit argues here, pointing out that “debriefing by a parliamentary panel is not an exercise in political grandstanding, given that it is conducted behind closed doors.” There is, it concluded, a very powerful argument to be made that the officials in question have compromised on their duty and on their oaths to uphold the Constitution.
