In a landmark move, the Gujarat government announced 33 per cent reservation for women in the recruitment of police force - an attempt to empower women and uplift them in the society. Chief Minister Anandiben Patel thus fulfilled her government's 100-day agenda for good governance. It is good that women are entering into all fields, including the male-dominated, hazardous and arduous job requirements. The old concept of women confined to four walls of the house and rearing children is fast changing. One hopes other state governments across the country emulate Gujarat by earmarking 33 per cent reservation for women in police recruitment. In the same breath, the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre may push the Women's Reservation Bill, which is pending for a very long time in the august House. The government should convince the parties, which are opposed to the Bill on one pretext or the other, and enable it to see the light of the day.
