Letters: The FDI fix

The doors are now open for foreign retail giants like WalMart, Teso and Carrefour to enter and monopolise the growing retail market in India. In their attempt to make profit, these foreign retail chains will entice customers into buying products they don’t need and turn their houses into godowns, thereby promoting the culture of over-consumption. On the other hand, millions of small shopkeepers will lose their business. The jobs created will be a fraction of the jobs lost due to the entry of foreign supermarkets. If the small have to lose out for the big to flourish, so be it — this seems to be the economic policy of the ruling party.
