Letters: Welcome move

The Supreme Court has done well to allow the government to use Aadhaar cards for the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, MGNREGA and pension and provident fund schemes after obtaining the consent of citizens. The use of Aadhaar cards were earlier restricted to the public distribution system and the distribution of LPG.

The apex court's direction to the government that no person should be deprived of the benefits of social welfare schemes just because he or she did not have an Aadhaar card is a welcome move. The authorities could also think of turning the Aadhaar into a social security card on the lines of those in the US and the West so that citizens are rid of the need to carry multiple cards.
