Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress are so implacably opposed to the Left Front that was ousted from decades in power that she and her party functionaries spare no opportunity to it them for every ill in the state. A couple of months ago, a Trinamool MLA blamed the Left Front government for “injustice to stray dogs”. Now, faced with infant deaths in hospitals under her rule, Banerjee blames her rivals for those too. “Before spreading panic over infants' death, remember that all those mothers who lost their children had conceived during Left Front rule,” she told reporters. Perhaps she meant these mothers were malnourished, a factor that may have been responsible for the deaths of their new born children, and since Banerjee had been in power only seven months, her government could not be held responsible. But as a response to a tragedy, it was surely inappropriate.
