A Member of Parliament recently came up with a novel idea to boost agriculture. At a meeting of the consultative committee attached to the finance ministry, the MP suggested that the country should have two finance ministers — one for the agriculture sector and another for non-farm sector. The MP explained that having a separate finance minister would help increase agriculture’s contribution to GDP. According to someone present at the meeting Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee listened but did not offer a response.
