A cleric in Uttar Pradesh recently approached the Meerut district magistrate with a complaint against his wife. Arshad Badruddin, a 36-year-old imam, alleged that his wife had been haranguing him to shave his well-groomed beard.

He also alleged that the smartphone was the main cause of his wife's "misdemeanour", as she kept citing the examples of movie stars Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, who do not sport a beard.

The woman had allegedly even tried committing suicide with their children. Not one to blink first, Badruddin maintained: "If I shave my beard despite being an imam, what kind of message would I be sending out to my kids?"
