The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the Sangh Parivar affiliated students outfit, swept the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) polls on Saturday. It retained all four elected posts for the second consecutive year. The election was also notable for the debutant Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), a students’ wing backed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), being decimated.

The ABVP bagged the posts of president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary, defeating Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India candidates with significant margins. Candidates from CYSS were at the third position as per the overall vote count.

ABVP’s Satender Awana and Sunny Dedha were elected president and vice president of DUSU respectively. Anjali Rana won the post of Secretary and Chhattarpal Yadav was elected joint secretary.

The CYSS candidates were at the third position for the post of president, secretary and joint secretary while its nominee was in the second for the Vice-president’s post.

“Congratulations to ABVP & Students of Delhi University on winning the DUSU elections & making a clean sweep by winning all the four seats,” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, a DUSU president in 1974, tweeted. BJP national President Amit Shah tweeted: “A victory of ideology, ABVP rocks.”

The election was held on Friday. Only 43 per cent of the total of 1,35,298 students eligible for voting cast their votes.

“Efforts of CYSS were confined to banners only. They were unaware of ground realities. We did not consider them (CYSS) a challenge, since they did not talk of real issues, they benefited us in a way,” Awana, the newly elected president, said.

Election results of the students’ union elections in the Jawaharlal Nehru University are slated to be announced on Sunday.
