Congress dares Union Government to prove Rohingyas are terrorists

Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh said that govt should release some names

Congress asked the Union Government to prove its claim about Rohingya Muslims that the community has been involved in terrorist activities in the country.

“The Home Minister from Government of India had not disclosed a single name that so and so the person (from the Rohingya Muslim community) had been involved with the terrorist organisation,” Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh said here today. He said the union home minister should at least reveal a single name (identifying Rohingya as a terrorist).

The statement added significance as the government had told the Supreme Court recently that it would confidentially show evidence to judges that some Rohingya militants work closely with Pakistan-based terrorist groups. Two Rohingya petitioners have however challenged it in the court and said that their community is peace-loving and that most of them have no link to any terror activity.

Singh said the government was not allowing Rohingya Muslims to come to India as it felt there were terrorists among the refugees. When people from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) came to India following atrocities, they were given shelter as refugees despite most of them were Muslims, he added.

“On the one hand, the government was refusing to give refugee status to Rohingya while on the other hand, it was giving a grant to Bangladesh to settle them,” the Congress general secretary said. If the government was not accepting Rohingya as a refugee, why it was giving money to Bangladesh, he added.

Singh castigated minister of state for home Hansraj Ahir for stating Varun Gandhi's view as "against the national interest." Varun Gandhi had advocated asylum for the Rohingya Muslims. “The statement (of Ahir) has been humiliating,” Singh added.
