Upping the ante against the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati today demanded the imposition of president's rule in Uttar Pradesh alleging breakdown of the law and order machinery.

Addressing a news conference here, she asserted the widespread anarchy under the Akhilesh Yadav government was slowly turning into 'jungle raj' with the connivance of the ruling party leaders and senior officials.

She appealed to UP Governor Ram Naik to recommend imposition of the President's rule lest the Raj Bhawan was also held responsible for letting the anarchic regime continue in the state.

The former UP chief minister claimed ever since SP rode to power, the law and order machinery had continued to deteriorate. She even claimed if elections were to be held today, SP would lose miserably because of its misrule.

To buttress her point, Mayawati referred to the recent incident in Barabanki district, in which a woman was allegedly immolated by two cops in a local police station. She later succumbed in a Lucknow hospital. In her dying declaration, the woman had named the accused cops, who are now absconding.

The Barabanki incident exemplified the sorry state of affairs under the SP rule and its culture of governance, she underlined.

She was unsparing for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) too terming the party's protests and demonstrations over the UP law and order situation as theatrics.

"I would urge the BJP leaders not to indulge in drama over the law and order situation and instead impress upon the Centre to impose the President's rule in UP,"Mayawati said.

She further alleged a tacit understanding between the BJP and SP.

Replying to a question, she ruled out pre-poll alliance with any party in Bihar or other poll-bound states.

Meanwhile, Mayawati flayed the Akhilesh government for reversing the promotions made under the reservation in promotion rule claiming it showed the anti-dalit and castiest mentality of the SP. She claimed the Supreme Court had not annulled such promotions, but only ordered additional provisions to make the rule stricter.

She accused the SP government of only favouring a particular caste (Yadav) amongst the Other Backward Classes (OBC) and neglecting other OBCs, upper castes, dalits and minorities.

Besides, she said Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan should step down from the post pending the CBI inquiry into the 'killer and mega scam' of Vyapam, since his aides have also been accused of complicity.

Mayawati took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying the latter's claims of corruption free government stood hollow and his regime was as bad as the earlier Congress government at the Centre.

Over the years, BSP? core constituency of dalits, Brahmins and a section of Muslims has eroded and shifted to either SP or BJP, thus helping them gain at her party's expense.

In 2012, BSP had lost power in UP at the hands of SP, which made maximum capital of the negative perception of the then Mayawati dispensation, rocked by multiple case of corruption and allegation of embezzlement of public funds in parks and memorials. BSP could win only 80 seats in the 403 member UP assembly.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, BSP could not win even a single seat out of the 80 LS seats in UP, while BJP swept the polls on the back of 'Modi wave'.
