Venkateshan, running a gold ornament manufacturing unit, along with the two workers was bringing gold from Chennai. When the car stopped near Venkateshan's house, the gang, which was following them, demanded that the workers hand over the bag containing the gold.
As the workers refused to part with the gold, two gang members attacked them with a sickle, injuring them, and escaped with the bag, police said.
The workers had been admitted to the government hospital here, while a manhunt was on for the gang.
