Nearly 100 kg live sea cucumbers worth Rs 25 lakh were seized from a car near here today, forest department said.
A team of forest officials intercepted a car at Idayaravalasai checkpost on suspicion, but three occupants of the vehicle abandoned it and and fled.
During a search, 100 kg live sea cucumber valued at Rs 25 lakh were found in the car, they said.
The vehicle used for smuggling the sea cucumber was impounded, they added.
The officials said they would later release the endangered species into the sea.
Sea cucumbers, classified as endangered species and their harvest banned under the Wildlife Protection Act, are in great demand in South-East Asian countries considering its medicinal value.
