Eleven suspected members of an inter-state gang of auto lifters, who stole more than 500 cars in the national capital, have been arrested, the police said today.
The gang operated in Delhi, Haryana, Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan and the northeast region, they said.
In March, the Inter State Cell of the Crime Branch had busted the Sukhdev Gang involved in auto lifting by arresting one of its members Md Sibbu, who was accused in a vehicle theft case in Kaithal, Haryana, the police said.
Sibbu revealed that one Kewal gang was involved in recent motor vehicle thefts, they said.
Following the tip-off, the police between September 20 and 29 arrested the gang's leader Kewal and 10 of his associates.
During interrogation, Kewal said he and the others had stolen more than 500 cars from Delhi in the last one and a half years, the police said.
The cars were given to receivers in Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat and northeast region, they said.
They used to scout and locate vehicles of a particular make and colour as per demands of their customers, Alok Kumar, additional commissioner of police (Crime), said, adding that they used to change the engine and chassis numbers.
