The woman was injured in the waist and required 38 stitches, they said.
Initially, the police were suspecting that a stalker had attacked her, but their probe has indicated that it could be a thief who wanted to cut off the strap of her bag.
The incident took place near a lake at Nehru Vihar when the woman, a first-year-student, was going to college, the police said.
The accused fled the spot and she was taken to a hospital by people in the area, they said.
It is suspected that she was attacked with a blade, the police said
The woman told the police that she had seen the accused roaming in the locality with some other men, they said.
