19,372 inmates lodged in C'garh jails: Assembly told

As many as 19,372 inmates are lodged in different prisons across Chhattisgarh as against their capacity of 12,281, the state Assemblywas told today.
As on December 31, 2017, a total of 19,372 inmates are lodged in the state's 33 jails as against their combined capacity of 12,281, Home Minister Ramsewak Paikra said in a written reply to query by Congress MLA Lakheshwar Baghel.
"The state has five central jails, 12 district jails and 16 sub jails," he said.
The five central jails have a total capacity of 7,005, but are housing 13,416 inmates, he said.
The central jail in Raipur houses 3,144 prisoners as against its capacity of 1,190, while the one in Durg has 2,062 inmates as against its capacity of 1,606, the minister said in the reply.
Similarly, the central jail at Bilaspur houses 3,484 prisoners, though it has a facility to keep only 1,838.
The central prison at Jagdalpur houses 2,238 inmates, while the one at Ambikapur 2,488 as against their respective capacity of 1,351 and 1,020 he said.
