Two persons were arrested in Haryana's Ambala district today for allegedly smuggling cattle to Uttar Pradesh, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted a truck at Ambala-Naraingarh Chowk near Naraingarh, around 20 km from here. During the search, 20 buffaloes and six calves were recovered, said Ambala Superintendent of Police Abhishek Jorwal.

The duo did not have proper documents about transporting the cattle. Besides, there was no sufficient space for keeping so many buffaloes in the truck, police said.

Most of the buffaloes were in a semi-conscious condition as they had been bundled inside the truck and had not been provided food and water for a long time, the SP said, adding that they were being transported to Uttar Pradesh from Punjab.

Two persons -- Bhoora and Gulfam, residents of Saharanpur in UP -- were arrested and booked under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the police added.
