Delhi Police have arrested two persons, suspected to be members of the Malda module of a fake currency racket which is involved in pumping counterfeit notes, printed in Pakistan, into the country through Indo-Bangladesh border.
The accused, Vikas Kumar Sharma (36) and Moti Lal Basak (40), were arrested yesterday from ISBT Anand Vihar and fake notes amounting to Rs 3 lakh in the denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 were recovered from their possession, police said today.
The last information about the module, based in Malda in West Bengal, was received around two months ago, following which a team was formed to track the members.
The syndicate is involved in pumping and circulating Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICNs) printed in Pakistan and infiltrated through Indo-Bangladesh border, DCP (Special Cell) P S Kushwah said.
During interrogation it emerged that Basak was the carrier of FICNs and Sharma had come from Punjab to receive the delivery.
Police further said, in its continuing pursuit to contain the menace of high quality FICN being pumped into Indian markets to corrode the Indian economy by agencies of a hostile neighbour, a team of Special Cell has been monitoring various FICN couriers/smugglers operating across the Indo-Bangladesh borders.
